Summerville

My summer in Somerville… it’s kind of a pun. Ha?

Those Annoying Girls July 2, 2008

I went to a TAG “meeting” tonight which was fun.  My dinner cost $40 and my dessert was another $16.  I have never in my life spent that much  money on a meal.  It freaked me out a little.  Luckily I eat pretty much nothing but cereal otherwise.  But it does kind of deter me from buying the $70 shoes I have wanted… money is kind of a zero sum game from me.

The women are awesome.  I love Mass politics, especially the progressive women.  They are baller out of control.

Georgia is really adamant about setting me up with the field director of a campaign we’ve endorsed.  Apparently he is 23 and very awkward… which just so happens to be my type.  I would be totally down to mingling with political singles.  If only I wasn’t apparently so repulsive to all heterosexual males.  Oh well.

The Intern Diaries July 1, 2008

Today, when I got into work, my instruction was: I need you to go find 150 feet of string.

I did, in fact, triumph in this assignment, finding 200 feet of cotton string and a 50 foot clothesline, then the rest was pure brilliance.

An intern on Thursday gets to go with Georgia to a variety of polling places and hold one end of the string.

First Day with the New Campaign June 26, 2008

So I went to Gloucester for the first time tonight.  First of all, it is beautiful.  Gloucester is one of the first sea ports in the United States.  The iconic “Gorton’s Fisherman” originated in Gloucester.  Also the movie The Perfect Storm was filmed there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloucester

Beautiful.  We are moving into the campaign office on July 1st and it is VERY charming.  There is a fireplace, it is small and colorful, next to a independent coffee shop/cafe and is steps away from the sea.  I DIG IT.

Tonight I went with the campaign manager, her daughter, and the manager to a Seafood Festival.  I had been thinking about breaking my vegetarianism for a long time upon my arrival to this area, but didn’t until tonight.  It was good… but not THAT good.  All the big local restaurants in the city competed for the best dish, so I think it is supposed to be REALLY good food; meal tickets were $25 (I didn’t pay) so it wasn’t like we were getting free crap.

Eating seafood didn’t really bother me that much until I ate 2 separate dishes that both had meat in them along with seafood.  Nowhere on the menu said that they had ham and sausage in them and they didn’t feel compelled to say anything.  It was this point that made me freaked out.  I realized there is a VERY fine line between meat and seafood and I think I am going to return to strict vegetarianism.

We stopped by my candidate’s house afterwards and it is AWESOME.  It is kind of the back house to another candidate’s house and kind of looks like a hippie den.  It is pretty messy and has a little creek that runs by it.  It is also about 1/2 a block from a really beautiful beach.

The best part is AaK has 4 baby kittens!  They are only 2 weeks old and I got to play with them.

The current campaign manager is… interesting.  More to come about that later.

Campaign Status June 26, 2008

So, long story short I am joining a pretty small campaign that M.A. has not endorsed.  The campaign manager is going to Mongolia with his family for a while, and I will basically be running the show while he is gone.

Georgia was a bit reticent about me working on the campaign because M.A. has not endorsed in the race.  We talked it out and she said it was fine as long as we make it VERY clear that I work for MA a few days a week and when I work on AaK’s campaign, I am NOT an MA intern.

New York June 26, 2008

I went to New York last weekend.  It was great.

My second favorite part was a place called Yogurtland.  It was AMAZING.  There were 13 different kinds of frozen yogurt and a bazillion different kinds of toppings.  You can get as many types of frozen yogurt and toppings as you want and charge you by the ounce.  I got tart mango and tart peach with strawberries, chocolate chips, cheese cake bites, rasberries, and maybe that’s it.  It was delicious.  I wanted to go back the next day, but it never happened.

My first favorite part was seeing everyone.  I really really missed people.  It was great to see Colin and Nikrad and Rachel and Olivia.  I had tons of fun and it was hard to come back.

My housemate/apartmentmate is very nice.

I am awkward to live with.

She is French and a Harvard post-doc student studying how Confucianism has shaped contemporary Korean society (I think).

I am kind of a dumbass who doesn’t typically have to be into work until 10 or noon and comes home late, eats cereal almost exclusively, and watches Ace of Cakes or Jon and Kate Plus Ei8ht almost every night.

I think she is on strike form unloading the dishwasher, though am not sure.  The dishwasher has been left open and full for about 2 days now and she, usually neat, has started to leave her dirty dishes around the kitchen.

I don’t know if she realizes this, but I do not put my dishes in the dishwasher.  Seeing as I only eat cereal, I have pretty much been using the same bowl, juice glass, and spoon since I got here.  I just wash it and leave it on the sink-side drying rack.

I don’t know if she is expecting me to unload this washer full of not my items?

There may also be a bit of tension surrounding the care of the 2 cats.  I was told by the person I am renting from I would only be responsible for them after my housemate leaves… but I do not know if she was informed of this arrangement and resents me for my inaction.

Despite this being a terrible idea, I have decided to go to NYC this weekend.  I should definitely be staying and working at a carnival event for a candidate I may work for and go canvassing and whatnot, but fuck it, I’m going.

Colin is coming from DC and Olivia is coming from Beantown… we may ride the same bus, but I don’t know when I’ll get off work tomorrow.

I am really excited.  I have spent almost no time in NYC and am kind of desperate to have a ridiculously fun/drunk/irresponsible time.  I also really miss Nikrad.  Much more than I thought I would and am looking forward to seeing him (especially since he turned 21 yesterday).  I am either crashing at his place or Rachel’s house, but that may be a spontaneous decision.  Hopefully I will see Zack, too, since I never even said goodbye before he graduated/I left.

I am either taking megabus or the chinatown bus… either one won’t cost me more than 15 bills each way which is crazy cheap.

Politix: So my whole reason that I have funding to be here is so I can work on a campaign.  Naturally, Professor S- had us pick campaigns months ago.  And I did.  And then G- told me I cannot work for here and now I am back to square one.  I have been shopping around a little and have narrowed it down to 2.

I was going to base my decision based on how many “diversity points” the candidates had.  Candidate A is gay, but also male and white.  Candidate B is gay, first generation American, of color, AND a woman.  Candidates A and B are both tiny… they probably could have made good jockeys had they not chosen different careers.  While this makes me a horrible person (which I do not try to deny), it is for legit reasons.  No matter how progressive a straight white male candidate is, I feel like I am doing a lot more for equality and the progressive cause if I donate my time to someone who doesn’t have so much going for them already.

I then was going to factor in how I get along with the campaign managers.  When you are together for 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, you want to make sure you get along.  I got along with my last campaign manager really really well and I would love to find the same this summer.  I am realizing quickly that that is not going to happen.

Manager A is clearly a repressed homosexual that makes me uncomfortable.  I was SURE you was gay and it wasn’t until I spoke to another M-A- intern that told me she was shocked when he told her he was straight.  Also, he is just generally weird, obnoxious, and has a nervous laugh that makes me cringe.

Manager B was home schooled.  She looks and dresses like she is 35 years old and I thought she was until she told me she was 23.  The weirdest thing: she has a pet parrot that she BRINGS to the office with her.  I couldn’t even make something that weird up.  I rode in her car.  There is bird poop on the backs of the front seats.

Also campaign A is bike-able, even walkable.  Campaign B I would need to drive.  And I HATE driving in Boston.

I think I need to wait until G- gets back from vacation and talk to her about the whole debacle.  I also think I need to pick a campaign that will give me some street cred and make connections so I can eventually find a real job after I graduate.

So the debate continues………………… I am getting much more optimistic, though.  I think it will shape up to be a fantastic summer.

LOLcatz: There is a cat that looks like a small snow leopard that cruises around my window at night.  It is at least twice as big as any domestic cat I have seen.

Sandwiches: Pretty much anyone who knows me knows that sandwiches are my favorite food.  I can pretend to be cultured and name other things, but really, I love sandwiches.  They are versatile and delicious.  I have found 2 great sandwich places since I’ve been here.  Considering I have only gone to get food at a few places, these are good odds and makes me highly curious about Boston’s untapped sandwich potential.

The 2 places are: Darwin’s (the one on Mt. Auburn) and All Star Sandwich Bar.  They are great.  Darwin’s also has a pastry/coffee shop attached with free wireless.  All Star Sandwich Bar has an incredibly attractive (but not too attractive) mostly male staff of pseudo-hipster waiters/cooks, a great color scheme, and FREE OREOS.
